Though many of the cards may seem to denote one thing but really are representative of another, the lover's card is pretty on the nose. The card also can be a sign that there needs to be honesty and communication in relationships. It might mean that you need to work on your maturity level when it comes to your emotions to keep your relationships balanced.
Tarot cards have been used for centuries to give insights into life question. For those starting out though, they need to understand both the major and minor arcana. This is the first step in becoming more comfortable utilizing these ancient divination tools.

All tarot decks are broken into two categories- major and minor arcana. Each of these different categories has multiple cards that come with a wealth of different meanings. The meanings though depends solely on the tarot reader and the situation or questions of the individual they're reading the tarot for.
Like with any other type of new skill a core understanding of what each card means can help the tarot reader elevate their readings and become more spiritually in tune with their cards. So in this guide, we're going to go over both the major and minor arcana, their meanings, and correspondences to astrology and elements.
Before we jump into breaking down each of the cards in the tarot decks we wanted to take a look at the history and origin of the cards themselves. The first deck was most likely developed in northern Italy during the 1300s and 1400s. The oldest deck that is known is the Visconti-Sforza deck that was first commissioned by the Duke of Milan. At this point in history, tarot decks were not what we today think of as tarot decks.
In fact, at this time they were known as tarocchi and were more like a bridge game very popular amongst the nobles. The images on the decks were inspired by carnival and quickly spread through most of Europe. It was when it reached France that tarot cards became the name, and it wasn't till the 1700s that they began being linked to mysticism.

That tie to mysticism came from a book that linked them to Egyptian mythology and broke down the tarot symbols linking them to the same source. This link to mysticism made it very easy for people to begin using them for divinational purposes. During this period of time, there was a heightened fascination with the occult and the popularity of tarot cards increased.
As their popularity grew into the 1900s they became associated with several mystical groups including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Eventually, the deck that most people are familiar with, the Waite-Smith deck, was created and became a fixture in mysticism and alternative religions for the decades to follow.

As we said above the decks are broken into major arcana and minor arcana. The major arcana are the first 22 cards in the deck. When looking at the major arcana these typically have to do with human experiences like falling in love or challenges. Having an in-depth understanding of the major arcana cards is vital to an in-depth and accurate tarot reading.
It might seem very daunting when first beginning to read tarot but once you have the core understanding of each of the cards it is much easier than to read the vibrational energy from them and deliver the messages that the universe is looking to deliver to the people you are reading the cards for (whether that be you or someone else).
